2011 Scout Projects – Amon Basin

Spencer Ballo of Troop 275 initiated his project in August establishing a new spur trail from the high main access road to the Overlook Trail in South Amon. The 400 foot trail now provides a safe route for hikers. The two old steep routes at the high main access road pond overlook bench have been closed with trail closed signs in place. The second portion of his project will be to place two 4x8 foot aluminum US Bureau of Reclamation area regulation signs on the East Amon drainage at the area known as "Beer Falls". This portion of the project will be completed in the fall of 2011.

2010 Scout Projects

Five scout projects were completed this year. The planning activities started in January with Scouts from Troops 143 and 199 for projects in Chamna and Amon Basin. Two projects finished in April including Taylor Osborn installing right-of-way and KID signs in Amon Basin and Jake Foster completed improvements to the Amon South Entrance.

Tim Osborn installed signs and dog bag dispensers along the trails in Chamna in July. Taylor Mortenson completed the two overlook decking projects in the Amon Basin in September (see below).

The last project for the year completed in October by Benjamin Howard installing the mid-point kiosk in Chamna. The heavy timber construction is unique and adds a rustic look to this entrance point.

Well over 550 hours were spent on these projects by the scout and his troop members. The project develops their leaders skills by working with community businesses for labor, material donations, and equipment usage. It is an honor and privilege to have worked with these fine young men as they planned and implement their project in the development and improvements for the Tapteal Greenway recreation areas.

Amon Basin Projects

Taylor Mortenson completed the Amon Basin decking project on July 14, 2010. The decking observation areas overlook the beaver dams and springs area along the west fork of Amon creek in the Amon Basin.

The project was pre-assembled at his home, dis-assembled and carried to the site, then re-assembled. Pratt Construction assisted with the design and construction techniques. A local contractor supplied the decking and Home Depot donated the pressure treated 4 x 4's and screws.

Chamna Natural Preserve Projects

Benjamin Howard completed the mid-point kiosk in Chamna Natural Preserve in October 2010. The mid-point kiosk provides users of Chamna Natural Preserve with informational panels detailing appropriate uses of the Preserve, along with plants, animals, and a brief history.

The heavy timber construction was partially completed at Benjamin's home, transported to the site, then installed in its permanent location.
